Sugar Platform
The largest single component of cellulosic biomass is typically the cellulose portion of the plant. Another large component of cellulosic biomass is the hemicellulose portion of the plant. The cellulose and hemicellulose portions of biomass typically make up between 50% and 75% of the raw biomass. Both xylose (a 5-carbon sugar derived from the hemicellulose) and glucose (a 6-carbon sugar derived from the cellulose) can be produced as a mixed sugar stream or separate sugar streams in the PureVision process. These biobased sugars are the raw materials used to manufacture biofuels, chemicals and consumer products.
